Help design bike parking for train stations / ferry terminals

We’re working with Auckland Transport designers on a new fit- for- purpose bike parking facility for Panmure Train Station. If it gets your tick of approval it could be a template for other train stations and ferry terminals.

Even if you ‘re never likely to park your bike at Panmure, please read and respond to this blog because your views will influence the design of a possible template used for other locations.

Panmure Bike Park design

We blogged last year about new bike parking shelters built at Papakura and Papatoetoe train stations and the Birkenhead ferry terminal, and the upgraded facility at Onehunga train station. The first 3 of these facilities are barely used, but the Onehunga facility, ( a simple covered shelter with CCTV) is more popular.

It’s hard to identify the reason for Onehunga’s relative success. It’s handy location beside the platform and waiting area is likely to part of its appeal. We’ll bear this in mind for other new facilities, but it’s not always easy to replicate in other locations.

Blog feedback said most people are happy to rely on their own bike lock, provided its backed up by good CCTV. This could explain why the locked facilities are not favoured. They could appeal more if they used a HOP card, but the cost of loading this extra capability onto a HOP card is prohibitive. So we’re stuck with the need to apply for a special swipe card from AT. Not a winner!

The plan below shows both the station building and the smaller plaza opposite coloured red. (Click to make clearer.) The bike park is shown as a blue square on the plaza. This site has good views down to the train lines, is covered by CCTV and the supervised by the 24 hour security personnel based at the station. After considering a range of locations we support this as the most practical option available.

AT has prepared a survey to get your comments on the design features and facilities of the Panmure bike park.

Here it is  – please respond .. before Friday 4th July. We’d also love you to spread the survey link far and wide so we get a strong response.
