Take your hat off to the Orakei Local Board

1 min read

Wonderful things keep happening with boardwalks around Orakei, thanks to the Local Board’s commitment to walking and cycling.

Dodging between Friday’s south westerly showers, I  went exploring with a friend check out the Orakei shared path boardwalks. We began on the existing Orakei Basin boardwalk first, because we love it – and it’s fun contemplating how it will be widened or duplicated to provide separate north and south flows as part of the Tamaki to Glen Innes project. Can’t wait!

We then crossed Orakei Rd to find the newly completed boardwalk that heads towards Shore Rd, overlooking Hobson Bay. It’s great – go see! We were impressed by the wooden sculpture celebrating local iwi. If you look carefully you’ll spot the existing Hobson Bay boardwalk in the mangroves below St Kentigerns College.

Orakei Rd boardwalk Construction is still underway on a boardwalk across the mangroves to link  near the Hobson Bay boardwalk on Shore Rd. My only concern is that this will be fairly narrow, so won’t cater for cycling and walking or the high volumes of both modes we know will use them.

Despite Friday’s rain we met people out enjoying the boardwalks –  shows you can’t overestimate how much we all love Auckland’s harbour and coastal boardwalks.  Keep up the good work, Orakei Local Board!
