Just a note that there will be bike valet parking for this year’s Anzac Day Events at the Cenotaph in the Auckland Domain, on Saturday April 25th.
The bike parking will be on Wintergarden Road.
Note there are two ceremonies this year at the Cenotaph: the Dawn Service at 6.00 a.m. (parade commences at 5.30 a.m.), and another at 11.00 a.m. (parade starts at 10.45).
Visit here for more details about those ceremonies (plus others around the city), and how to get there.
On this centenary of Gallipoli, did you know that WW1 saw New Zealand’s first deployment of an official cycle infantry?
A company of 204 (including 8 officers) were issued with 201 bicycles and six vehicles as part of the New Zealand Division which left home for the front line as part of the country’s contribution to the war effort.
You can read more about the activities of the New Zealand Cyclist Corps during the Great War here; and click through to see the full-sized image of some of the Anzac Cyclists below. It cannot have been easy to roll these machines through the grim mud of the trenches.
Lest we forget.
