As part of the fab Eco-West Festival, Melanie from Bike Te Atatu is organizing three friendly guided bike rides aimed at showing newish riders how easy it is to get a little further than you might think.
Experienced cycle folk are welcome too, of course – the more the merrier.
The first ride, on Easter Saturday morning, is a ‘bike and play’ event that runs from Te Atatu Peninsula to the Waterview Playground. The ride is about 30 minutes at leisurely pace along the smooth and newly refreshed NW cycleway – great for spotting sea-birds, and kite-surfers off Pt Chev.
Your Waterview destination is the brand spanking new playground, which has a splash park and lots of climbing and sliding things. As NZTA’s Brett Giddon said when the playground opened, “There are water play and risk-taking areas, as well as slides, swings, roundabouts and sports courts – and while we couldn’t give [kids] the ‘edible’ playground they wanted with trees of lollies, plenty of fruit trees have been planted instead.”
After a play, you’ll have the option to continue with the group to the festivities (and food trucks!) in Chamberlain Park, or head home at your own pace.
Here’s the event page, and here are the details:
- Ride begins at 10am, Saturday 26th March.
- Meet at the Harbourview – Orangihina Reserve (aka Harbourview People’s Park) on Te Atatu Peninsula, at the carpark opposite the Gloria Ave Roundabout.
- The ride will proceed to Waterview Playground – and then, around 11.45, you can choose whether to carry on to Chamberlain Park or head back home.

And just FYI, these are the next two rides:
- 9th April, 2 pm A Slow Roll around the Streets: a hyper-local family-friendly ride – includes ice-cream stop!
- 10th April, 10 am Twin Streams ride to Henderson: via Tui Glen playground and the Corban Arts Estate.
