As I’m writing this, I’m just back from my third volunteering stint flyering for Bike Auckland. I’ve been handing out Bike Auckland “Cycling Works” leaflets on the St Lukes Rd intersection of the North Western Cycleway. What a lot of fun it was!
When I signed up I was glad to have the opportunity to play a small part in promoting something I really believe in – safer streets that encourage cycling. But it has been so much more. I’ve spent time with my “tribe” and been enthused by the numbers of people choosing to pedal.
Today I turned up at the appointed hour to meet the other volunteers. Admittedly, it was a little earlier than I usually get the day going! We all donned our Bike Auckland hi-vis vests and, armed with a handful of leaflets, we turned to face the waves of people on bikes pouring in from the west. What a joy to behold!
When bikes had to stop at the traffic lights we executed what became a well-rehearsed manoeuvre. We got to as many as possible, pressed the leaflet into their hands and delivered our quick explanation about the campaign. Forget the elevator pitch, this is the traffic light pitch!
Reactions were nearly all positive. Most seemed happy to share a brief interaction with us. Some were keen to chat for longer. We heard tales about supportive workplaces for cyclists, less supportive workplaces, the state of the cycleway and of course the weather (the wind was behind them today!). Many thanked us. Sometimes travelling around the city by bike can be hard but this was a great antidote.
When we could no longer get any words out we retired to St Luke’s Plant Barn. There we enjoyed some refreshments (thank you Bike Auckland) and a kōrero. It was the perfect way to finish.
