Are you passionate about creating a more lovable, sustainable, and people-friendly Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland? Are you an organiser, ready to develop and grow meaningful initiatives?

Can you create a supportive environment which brings out the best in people – while also planning and delivering timely and impactful activations?

If you are looking for an opportunity to be involved in something meaningful, and to create a positive impact on the wider community, then we have an exciting opportunity for you.

The Position: Volunteer and Events Manager

We are seeking a Volunteer and Events Manager, 25 hours per week. You would take the lead on managing our Volunteer Programme and our Bike Valet service, and delivering events which help us to achieve our goals. Your main goals would be to support and grow our volunteer programme, to coordinate and grow our Bike Valet programme, and to deliver small-to-medium impactful events and activities.

You would work directly with our Community Activation Manager, Communications Manager, Admin Support, and Chief Biking Officer. We are a small, collaborative, and agile team committed to creating a more bike-able region.

Background

Bike Auckland relies on the hard work of volunteers to deliver our mahi (work). Volunteers do many different roles for Bike Auckland, many of them highly skilled. These include everything from infrastructure feedback, graphic design, and delivering workshops, to hands-on advocacy, such as handing out flyers.

Our Bike Valet service is a growing paid offering which encourages people to cycle for transport by providing secure bike parking at events across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Find out more about Bike Valet here.

Bike Auckland events include Bike Breakfasts, Love Your Path days, whānau (family) friendly group rides, and Bike Champions Forum speaking events.

  • You have a passion for, and a belief in, the power of collective advocacy to create positive change
  • You are passionate about the role volunteers play in non-profit organisations and advocacy
  • You are committed to diversity and inclusion

Experience

  • You are excited to put your experience in delivering small events or projects into action for cycling and climate advocacy!
  • Your prior experience managing staff or volunteers has well-equipped you to ensure our volunteers and staff are supported, engaged and performing to a high standard

Skills

  • You are persuasive without being pushy, able to ‘sell’ the Bike Valet service
  • You are adept at collaborating with others to make things happen
  • You are highly organised, ‘locking things in’ gives you satisfaction
  • You are alert to opportunities that can be seized as they arise
  • You know how to get the best out of volunteers and casual staff

Responsibilities

  • Manage, support, and grow our volunteer programme
  • Coordinate Bike Valet logistics and staffing

  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partner organisations

What’s in it for you?

This mahi (work) is for a passionate and self motivated person, who will find it rewarding and fulfilling. You’ll be rewarded by seeing the results of your efforts as you increase numbers of both volunteers and successful Bike Valet activities. You have the opportunity to work flexibly from home or from our shared office space, as well as out and about in the community. We offer the chance to join an inclusive and dedicated team who are proud to speak up for a better Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

About us

Bike Auckland believes more people on bikes makes for a more joyous Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland for everyone. We are a registered charity and a member-based incorporated society. We advocate for safer, more accessible streets, advise on best practice design, and activate a diverse, joyful community of people on bikes.
