Diversion at Great North Road for Northwestern

Hello all NW Causeway riders – the Well-Connected Alliance is readying itself to do the final layout of the shared path around the corner of the Great North Road interchange, west of the GNR walk/cycle overbridge.

To do this, they will need to detour cyclists onto a temporary path. But have no fear, you will only be “cutting the corner” for a few dozen metres, not being sent all the way to Avondale and back…

The map below (this is our sketch, so excuse any differences to how it will look in the final layout) shows the temporary path that is planned. We went out on site with the construction team, and have highlighted the need for good sightlines, and making sure the turns are not too tight – and well-signed, and sufficiently lit.

We also asked that crossing over the kerb at the end of the bridge ramp (where two railing panels will be removed temporarily) is smoothly ramped on both sides with asphalt, so nobody comes a cropper going across at an angle.

Hopefully, all will work out well – but once it is open, please do comment below (or via Facebook or Twitter) and let us know if it’s working. The diversion is intended to be operative in a few weeks, and then stay in place for around one month.

The aerial is a bit out of date (flyovers everywhere now), but this is roughly how the diversion will work.

On an unrelated note, on the way to and from our site visit, we saw a fair bit of aggro and impatience (from both camps!) at the Carrington Road zebra crossing, which is usually pretty civilised. Is this our version of May Madness, maybe? Anyhow, let’s all be safe and considerate.
