Bikes n Beers Biketober! He Rā Maumahara | Remembering the NZ Land Wars
Friday October 25 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
As people on bikes, we are intimately familiar with the geography of our city, but what about it’s history? Did you know Auckland’s Great South Road was built to make it easier for colonial forces to invade the Waikato?
This month we’ll be acknowledging He Rā Maumahara, our National Day of Remembrance of the New Zealand Land Wars, commemorated on October 28th. This is also the date of the 1835 signing of He Whakaputanga- our nation’s Declaration of Independence. Did you know we had one?
THE PLAN
Bring along a story to share about the history of a place in Tāmaki Makaurau. This could be the story behind a place name, an important feature of the landscape like a maunga (mountain) or awa (river), or about how a particular suburb came to exist. Did you know the suburb of Howick was a Fencibles settlement, built as a military defense post?
