Checklist

Actions you can take to promote your community group’s goals around local elections. Do you have more ideas? We’d love to hear them. Please email info@bikeauckland.org.nz.

Before the election (until 9 Sep 2025)

  • Ask community to register at vote.nz.
  • Ask community to check their address is correct at vote.nz.
  • Encourage people to sign up for SMS reminders to vote.
  • Ask transport questions at candidate debates.
  • Organise or co-host a meet the candidates event.
  • Tag candidates in social posts, e.g., “@[candidate], will you fix this dangerous intersection?”
  • Send a questionnaire to candidates, asking them what they think about local active transport issues. Share the results with your community.

During the election (9 Sep – 11 Oct 2025)

  • Host a vote party at the post box (22 Sep – 7 Oct 2025) or orange vote box (22 Sep – 11 Oct 2025).
  • Share the dates when voting is open.
  • Share the list of candidates (avoid telling people who to vote for, but sharing questionnaire results is fine).
  • Remind community of the last days to post their vote (7 Oct for post boxes, noon on 11 Oct for orange vote boxes).
  • Share the location of neighbourhood post boxes and orange vote boxes.
  • Encourage people to post photos of themselves posting their votes (without details shown!) on social media.

After the election (after 17 Oct 2025)

  • Invite local board members to your Biketober event.
  • Take newly elected members on a bike tour of the area.
  • Ask for a slot to present to your Local Board on local issues.

Auckland local election timeline

  • Voting is open Tuesday 9 September to noon on Saturday 11 October 2025. During this period, voters must return their vote to a post box (by 7 October), or to an orange vote box (pictured above), which can be found in places like libraries and supermarkets.
  • Voting papers will be delivered by post and all registered voters should have received them by 22 September.
  • Final results will be announced Monday 13 October to Friday 17 October 2025.
